Learn the art of western floral leather carving with internationally-known leatherworker Daniel Rhodes! This half-day workshop is designed for makers with some basic leatherworking experience, but all skill levels are welcome. Beginners will focus on learning foundational carving techniques, while more advanced students can explore higher-level detailing and tooling skills.
Each student will leave with a hand-carved leather piece (approximately 4x4") that can be framed, displayed, or incorporated into a future project like a notebook cover, bag, or wallet. Students are also welcome to bring their own undyed vegetable-tanned leather project to carve on, as long as the tooling area is at least 4x4".
Bring any leather tools you already have, including a tooling slab if possible — but tools and slabs will also be available to borrow during class. If you’re sensitive to sound, we recommend bringing earplugs… leather tooling can get loud in the best way.
Daniel Rhodes is President of the Raleigh Leatherworkers Guild and is known internationally for his floral leather carving work. This workshop is a special mini-class connected to the advanced floral carving course he’ll be teaching at the International Federation of Leather Guilds show later this year.
